20 Years: meanest love songs?

There's a great Seattle PI blog post about the 20 meanest love songs ... of all times.  The author, Athima Chansanchai, had her own personal list (the article referenced an AOL's Music Spinner list) and wouldn'tcha know that Maktub's 20 Years made her top 5 list. Love it!  Which got me to thinking which line in that song is Athima thinking is truly mean. I'd never thought of it as a mean love song, but alternate interpretations of lyrics are ususally better than the lyricist's intentions. Agree, Reggie?

Anybody have an opinon on what lines are particularly cruel in 20 Years (or any Maktub song for that matter)? Athima, if you're reading this let us know what you think. Maybe it's as simple as "20 years from now, we still remain the same"?

20 years is about a guy breaking up with his girlfriend because he doesn't know where he is from...and he has a silver tongue! and he's mean :bawling: Does this help?

Sure does. Here goes a sad (but true) confession. I play keyboards in a band with Reggie Watts. The band is called Maktub, but I couldn't really tell you what half the songs are about. I'm not a lyrics listener -- I know them, but I don't really know what they're about. I think your interpretation sounds reasonable, Karen. Rock on.

I KNEW I should've made clear my definition of "mean" isn't really the same as the editors of AOL's Music Spinner. For me, love and hate are hopelessly intertwined. You can't really hurt unless you've really loved and your song, "20 Years" totally speaks to me that way, of how you can't have one without the other. And yeah, there's an ex it specifically applies to. :-) Hope that helps.

That makes perfect sense, Athima. I love that this song brings an ex to mind for you -- the best love songs do. Thanks for the blog post!

I'm kinda with Daniel... never thought 20 Years was particularly mean. Guess I gotta listen closer; I read it as a guy looking back at a relationship that was over a long time ago and reflecting on how time had changed his perception of things. As for mean love songs, Subtle Ways is chock full of them: Lies, Dichotomy and (debatably) Intuition. While we're at it, how about Just Like Murder. If not mean, certainly tortured. Now that I really give it some thought, I don't get the feeling any of you guys have a mean bone among you.

Daniel(& Chris), I think Intuition is more about telling it like it is to someone hurtful than being a mean song. Here're the lyrics as I was able to write them down: Intuition Some may not believe it, the way it’s been going down I think the mystery that’s plaguing the rest of us in all our lives I think there is a problem never identified And if I had the answer in my mind, then certainly I’d see the light You Can’t explain this feeling (follow your intuition) You Oh (amidst the confusion, There is no true understanding (?) And by reaching this point, We can achieve so much (?), (?) There is no point, There is no end) Some say things are difficult for you I don’t know why until we give the emptiness some meaning Every time I wanted to, every time I told you You can take away my freedom, you can take away my life You can send me your deceptions with all the instruments of despite You can take away my reason when all the things I wish to see Are your lies You Can’t explain this feeling (follow your intuition) You Can’t explain this changing You’re changing Oh, you You can’t deny Nothing is the way that you want it to be Just because the feelings are so strong Just because the weight they bring is threatening Just because the rhythms are so wrong Just because the freedom is so lost Just because some things are never ending It’s no wonder you can’t see inside Your life

    Intuition

Some may not believe it, the way it’s been going down
I think the mystery that’s plaguing the rest of us in all our lives

I think there is a problem never identified
And if I had the answer in my mind, then certainly I’d see the light

    You
    Can’t explain this feeling
    (follow your intuition)
    You
    Oh

(amidst the confusion, There is no true understanding
    (?)
And by reaching this point, We can achieve so much
    (?), (?)
There is no point, There is no end)

Some say things are difficult for you
I don’t know why until we give the emptiness some meaning
Every time I wanted to, every time I told you

You can take away my freedom, you can take away my life
You can send me your deceptions with all the instruments of despite

You can take away my reason when all the things I wish to see
    Are your lies

    You
    Can’t explain this feeling
    (follow your intuition)
    You
    Can’t explain this changing
    You’re changing
    Oh, you

    You can’t deny
Nothing is the way that you want it to be
Just because the feelings are so strong
Just because the weight they bring is threatening
Just because the rhythms are so wrong
Just because the freedom is so lost
Just because some things are never ending
It’s no wonder you can’t see inside
    Your life
